I'd say, rather than using 6 tiles apart as your baseline - I'd choose a more contextual placement. Placing cities in strategic places for later in the game become extremely important. Unfortunately, on higher difficulties it can be hard to connect your cities to the resources that will pay off in mid and end game. Generally, I like to place my first 3 -5 cities in positions that have natural defenses - lakes, oceans, mountains, etc - so you can build a defensive wall so to speak.
I also like to have cities closer because as you go up in difficulty it can prove impossible to adequately defend your cities. In early game - placing cities closer together will give you an early gold boost when you connect with roads.
